A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting of another teenager in The Woodlands, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities identified the suspect as Easton Spoklie, who was taken into custody and charged with criminally negligent homicide. He is being held at the Montgomery County Jail.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the shooting was accidental and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the shooting appears to be accidental, and there is no threat to the public,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release on Thursday morning.
Deputies responded to the scene and attempted lifesaving measures on the victim, but the teen was pronounced dead there. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.
Officials have not yet released details about how the firearm was obtained or who discharged the weapon.
According to local reports, Spoklie was at the home at the time of the shooting and knew the victim. Friends said the victim was a student at The Woodlands High School.
The incident has shaken the community, with neighbors expressing grief and concern over firearm safety.
“It was tough, you know, everyone’s affected by it because it’s an accident,” neighbor Joe Arreola said. “There was really no ill intent, but you still lose a family member,” he said.
Arreola added that the tragedy hits close to home, recalling a similar loss in his own family involving an accidental shooting.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this family during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.
Friends and family of the victim are asking for privacy as they grieve.
The investigation remains ongoing.
