Following catastrophic damage from a weekend tornado, Alvin Independent School District (ISD) is banding together to assist Walt Disney Elementary School. One of six verified EF-2 tornadoes to have struck Texas, the one tore across Brazoria County and left the roof of the school wrecked and its kids displaced.
Beginning close to County Road 172, the 8.8-mile-traveling tornado claimed one life and injured several more. Near Mustang Road along Highway 35, Walt Disney Elementary experienced the most significant damage in the county.
Reacting, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees called an emergency meeting on Monday, December 30, 2024. The district has temporarily moved Walt Disney Elementary personnel and students to the former Alvin Elementary campus at 1910 Rosharon Road in Alvin.
"Our first concern is the welfare of our staff and students," stated Superintendent Carol Nelson. "We are dedicated to making sure their educational path proceeds uninterrupted, even in the wake of this unanticipated disaster."
The district will swiftly notify families and staff as it prepares transportation and logistical plans. Alvin ISD has also asked the community for help in getting beyond the effects of the disaster.
Even as the district negotiates this difficult period, the relocation project emphasizes its dedication to offering a safe and appropriate learning environment. People of the community are urged to assist the institution in reconstruction.
