Conroe ISD Superintendent Curtis Null to Step Down, Named Lone Finalist at Lake Travis ISD

The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees announced that Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null will step down at the end of the current school year to assume a new leadership role at Lake Travis ISD near Austin. Dr. During Thursday's special board meeting, Null, who has led Conroe ISD since 2018, was named the lone finalist for the Lake Travis superintendent position.

Under Texas law, a 21-day waiting period is required before the appointment can be made official. In a statement, Conroe ISD trustees expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Null for his dedicated leadership over the past six years. "We wish Dr. Null and his wife, Tanya, much success as they begin this new chapter," the board said .

The board also emphasized its commitment to a smooth transition and assured families, staff, and community members that the search for the next superintendent will uphold the district’s tradition of excellence. "In this season of change, we remain steadfast in our mission to improve educational outcomes for every student," the board added.

Dr. Null's roots in Conroe ISD run deep. He began his career at The Woodlands High School in 2000 and advanced through the ranks, serving as principal, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent before taking the district’s top post.Dr.

Dr. Null has achieved milestones in his career. During his tenure, Conroe ISD grew into Texas' seventh-largest school district, serving nearly 73,000 students and employing over 10,000 staff. The district opened 10 new schools, including a new high school, to keep pace with Montgomery County’s rapid growth. Moreover, voters approved a $1.97 billion bond in 2023 — the largest in county history — to fund future expansion.

During Dr. Null's term, Conroe ISD maintained the second-lowest tax rate among Houston-area districts while earning national recognition, including two consecutive appearances on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Large Employers. Beyond education, Dr. Null has been deeply involved in the community, serving on multiple local boards and earning the title of Community Citizen of the Year in 2022. The Conroe ISD Board of Trustees said it will share details in the coming weeks about the process for identifying and selecting the next superintendent.

"We are sincerely grateful for the ongoing support and partnership of our CISD families, staff, and community members," the board said. "We are confident that Conroe ISD will continue to thrive and pursue excellence at every level."
