Conroe Ranks No. 1 Houston Suburb for Growth

Last week's 2025 U-Haul Growth Index placed Conroe as the fastest-growing Houston suburb and 20th in the nation. This rank demonstrates the community still attracts newcomers.

The annual survey found that Conroe grew faster than neighboring suburbs, as more people moved to Houston, based on net gains in one-way U-Haul moving deals.

Texas is again the most favored state for migration. Over half of U-Haul trips went to Texas in 2025.

Robert Abidin, president of U-Haul Company of Northeast Houston, said Conroe has seen significant growth. "This place has a little of everything."

Since 2010, Conroe's population has more than doubled, from 56,200 to 115,000 by mid-2024, according to census data.

Officials and neighbors attribute the surge to outstanding schools, convenient recreation surrounding Lake Conroe, and lower property prices than central Houston.

One-way movement data showed considerable growth in Houston overall. It was the second-fastest-growing major US metropolis after Dallas-Fort Worth in 2025. Texas's cities, Austin and San Antonio, also performed well on the growth index, indicating large population migration.

Conroe was one of four Texas cities in the top 20 nationally, along with McKinney, Seguin, and New Braunfels. This suggests the state attracts many movers. Fast growth is causing challenges for Conroe. Recent SmartAsset research rated the city 16th in the nation for median property tax burden as a percentage of local household income. Costs are rising as more people use services. Still, Conroe's growth seems constant. Abidin remarked, "It used to be a small country town." People are moving to the city since it has transformed. The city has thrived.
