Conroe to shuttle fans to Houston for 2026 World Cup

In a move to support soccer enthusiasts, the city of Conroe is set to provide transportation options for fans heading to Houston during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials anticipate that rider fares will make the service self-sustaining.

Nancy Mikeska, the Deputy City Administrator, stated that the initiative enables the city to engage in a worldwide event while ensuring that taxpayers do not face additional financial burdens. “It showcases the city and engages it in international matters that typically wouldn't provide the city with a platform or visibility,” Mikeska stated. “We are thrilled about that.”

The city’s transportation department, which currently manages daily commuter bus routes to downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center, is set to expand its services to include shuttle trips for the World Cup. Authorities announced that the fare for the special service will be set at the usual daily bus rate.

City officials highlighted that the new service will not disrupt current commuter routes. Conroe has a history of implementing comparable transportation solutions for significant events, such as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, using a model designed to expand without interfering with regular operations.

The announcement comes as the Houston area gears up for an influx of visitors during the monthlong global competition. In February, officials from the Metropolitan Transit Authority approved improvements to bus, light rail, and MetroLift services to address rising demand.

The upcoming systemwide upgrades are scheduled to take place from June 7 to July 11, with anticipated costs ranging from $9 million to $10 million, as previously reported.

Houston will welcome seven World Cup matches at NRG Stadium, starting on June 14 and wrapping up on July 4. The city’s World Cup host committee is set to organize the FIFA Fan Fest in East Downtown, south of Shell Energy Stadium, running from June 11 to July 19 alongside the matches.

Officials in Conroe announced that the shuttle service provides a convenient solution for residents and visitors north of Houston to reach the games and associated events, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce parking demand in the city.

Further information, such as schedules and pickup locations, will be made available as the tournament start date approaches.
