A food manufacturer based in Michigan is initiating a recall of a widely distributed frozen product due to a potential salmonella contamination associated with an ingredient from a supplier, according to federal officials.
Champion Foods LLC has issued a voluntary recall of specific batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread. The company has sent this product to prominent retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Costco, Target, and Kroger.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reported that milk powder may be contaminated with salmonella, which is the source of the problem. The ingredient was provided to an external manufacturer responsible for creating a seasoning blend utilized in the product's five-cheese sauce.
The company announced that it has initiated a recall, citing “an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers.” No illnesses have been reported related to the product.
Salmonella is recognized as a potentially hazardous organism, capable of causing serious and sometimes fatal infections. This risk is particularly pronounced among young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Common symptoms associated with this condition often encompass fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The recalled products have been distributed extensively across various grocery chains and distributors. Notable retailers include Giant Landover, Grocery Outlet, Jewel, Schnucks, Meijer, Publix and Food City. Additionally, national suppliers such as C&S, UNFI, and SpartanNash were involved in the distribution of these items.
Officials have refrained from disclosing specific lot numbers in their initial announcement. However, they have urged consumers to examine packaging details and adhere to recall guidance as further information becomes accessible.
Consumers who have bought the affected product are advised against consumption and are encouraged to adhere to guidance provided by retailers or the manufacturer concerning returns or disposal.
The FDA announced that it is actively monitoring the ongoing recall while the investigation into the source of the contamination progresses.
