NWS Radar Flags Strong Thunderstorm Near Lake Conroe Dam

A strong thunderstorm swept through the Lake Conroe area Wednesday evening, prompting the National Weather Service in Houston to issue a Special Weather Statement, according to Montgomery County Police Reporter. Radar detected the cell near the Lake Conroe Dam at 6:07 p.m. CDT on July 2, tracking northeast at 5 mph and carrying wind gusts approaching 40 mph alongside the threat of half-inch hail.

For Conroe residents, the immediate concern Wednesday was falling tree limbs and brief property damage from gusty winds — the kind of fast-developing summer storm that can down power lines before utility crews have time to pre-position. Hail at half an inch is roughly the size of a large marble, enough to dent vehicle hoods and strip foliage, though generally below the threshold that shatters windshields.

The storm's northeast track put communities along the Lake Conroe shoreline and the Pinehurst corridor in its initial path, with the cell moving toward Willis and potentially the Sam Houston National Forest fringe. Residents in those areas were advised to move indoors and stay clear of windows until the system passed.

Montgomery County sits squarely in the Gulf Coast's summer convective zone, where afternoon heat regularly fuels pop-up thunderstorms from June through September. The Woodlands, Magnolia, and Conroe ISD campuses have all dealt with storm-related closures and infrastructure damage in recent years, making real-time NWS radar alerts a routine part of warm-season life here. The NWS Houston/Galveston office issues Special Weather Statements, a tier below a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, when a storm shows hazardous but not yet severe criteria.

Residents should check the NWS Houston/Galveston radar feed and Montgomery County emergency alerts before heading out Thursday, as additional afternoon storms are typical following an active convective day. Outdoor events near Lake Conroe or in open areas of the Sam Houston National Forest should have a lightning safety plan in place through the holiday weekend.
