Authorities are currently conducting an investigation following the tragic death of a construction worker due to a trench collapse on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred near a residential development at the intersection of FM 3083 and Loop 336, according to officials.
According to the Conroe Police Department, crews were engaged in drainage infrastructure work at the location when the trench collapsed, resulting in two workers being trapped underground. Colleagues present at the location swiftly initiated rescue operations.
“The construction workers on site displayed remarkable determination in their efforts to rescue their co-workers, successfully digging one individual out alive,” stated Sgt. Sergio Jasso. “Regrettably, when the other co-worker was recovered, he was found to be deceased.”
The identity of the deceased worker remains undisclosed by officials. The status of the rescued worker has not yet been disclosed.
Police Chief Jon Buckholtz extended his sympathies to the family of the victim, assuring them that the department would carry out a comprehensive investigation into the events leading up to the collapse. He informed the Houston Chronicle that more information would be shared as it becomes accessible.
Trench collapses at construction sites represent one of the most perilous risks, frequently happening unexpectedly and providing minimal opportunity for workers to flee. Authorities are set to examine the safety measures at the location, focusing on the adequacy of trench protections that were implemented.
