After a tornado tore through Conroe, Fire Station 154 suffered severe damage, with its roof ripped off, walls thrown away, and windows damaged. Firefighters from the station sprang fast to help with emergency calls and community recovery projects despite the damage.
Fire Chief Howard Rinewalt of the East Montgomery County Fire Department said that as firemen were tracking the storm, the tornado immediately struck the station. "They assumed the tornado would pass as they watched it across the street. Then, at the last instant, it pivoted and hit straight." Rinewalt remarked Fortunately, the firefighters had time to seek cover, therefore preventing injuries.
"I really am quite proud of them," Rinewalt said. "They headed straight to the vehicle after the tornado passed and began answering calls. Their bravery and dedication are just outstanding.
Widespread devastation was brought about by the storm over Conroe, especially in the Pickering Road area, where many people lost their houses. Helping affected families and clearing trash, firefighters from Station 154 have been quite crucial in recovery operations.
