Drivers in The Woodlands will see continued intersection upgrades, turn-lane extensions and a major highway widening as Montgomery County and the Texas Department of Transportation advance road projects tied to the 2025 road bond and ongoing state work.

Montgomery County is advancing its 2025 road bond program in The Woodlands, with nine road projects currently in progress or recently completed. The Texas Department of Transportation's significant widening project on Hwy. 242 coincides with this initiative. The Texas Department of Transportation expects to complete the widening project on Highway—242 by late 2026.
Many ongoing initiatives focus on improving traffic flow at congested intersections by extending turn lanes, modernizing signals, and expanding lane storage capacity. County Precinct 3 officials announced the finalization of several designs in early December, and they anticipate the commencement of construction on various projects in 2026.
Crews are set to extend turn lanes in both directions at the intersection of Lake Woodlands Drive and Gosling Road, aiming to alleviate congestion during peak hours. The engineering design for the project has been finalized, while utility coordination continues to progress. Construction is slated to commence in early 2026, with financing provided by the Montgomery County road bond.
Improvements at Research Forest Drive and Gosling Road will follow a similar timeline. Dual left-turn lanes are set to be extended from westbound Research Forest Drive to southbound Gosling Road, accompanied by further turn-lane extensions in both directions.
In the southern region, Woodlands Parkway at Kuykendahl Road is set to undergo improvements, including the addition of a new left-turn lane and enhanced lane storage capacity. Authorities have announced the completion of design work and the ordering of new signal equipment, with construction expected to begin in the spring or summer of 2026.
Upgrades to traffic signals are set to take place at Grogan’s Mill Road and the entrance to Grogan’s Mill Village Center, in addition to improvements at the intersection of Grogan’s Mill Road and North Millbend Drive. The engineering design phase continues for both projects, with construction anticipated to start in the summer of 2026.
The most significant undertaking affecting the region is the expansion of Hwy 242, stretching from FM 1488 to Interstate 45. The Texas Department of Transportation is utilizing the current right-of-way to expand lanes and reconfigure intersections.
According to a November update, the project stands at “71% complete,” with efforts ongoing into the fourth quarter of 2026. The project, totaling $29.11 million, receives funding from both federal and state sources.
Multiple projects have successfully concluded. The turn-lane extensions at Lake Woodlands Drive and East Panther Creek Drive, Grogan’s Mill Road at Lake Woodlands Drive, and Woodlands Parkway at Branch Crossing Drive have been completed between September and early December.
County officials advise that the listings are not exhaustive and that schedules may change as projects transition from design to construction.
