Conroe ISD, Houston schools plan to reopen as cold eases

Conroe ISD and most Houston school districts will reopen for classes Tuesday after a winter storm forced widespread closures. Officials caution that early-morning cold might still impair students, transportation, and campus operations.

As classes begin, Conroe ISD warned that “morning temperatures will be frigid during bus pickup and school arrival.” District authorities advised parents and children to make the best decision for their families as dawn remains subfreezing.

Houston ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Katy ISD, and Spring ISD announced plans to reopen Monday after winter weather closed most districts. Tarkington ISD was the only district closed Tuesday after a busted pipe produced a huge water leak that affected multiple buildings.

Houston ISD, one of the state's largest districts, began storm preparations days ago and will complete districtwide heating checks at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. The district's transportation crew winterized the bus fleet, testing batteries, topping off gasoline, and reviewing cold-weather safety procedures with drivers. Most HVAC systems operate remotely.

In Conroe, administrators focused on transportation and student safety during harsh cold. Officials said the district will run normally but advised families to layer children and give extra time for morning chores.

As icy conditions and mechanical issues hamper service, Spring ISD advised parents to “allow extra time as needed” as “some [bus] routes may experience delays”.

Katy ISD, which was hardest hit by the hurricane, said campuses will reopen, but coaches and directors will update athletics, fine arts, and other extracurriculars.

Regional universities are planning to reopen. The University of Houston, Lone Star College, and Houston Community College will resume courses Tuesday after weather delays. Rice University will resume all services and reopen its campus after remote classes Monday.

Charter networks like KIPP and YES Prep said they will keep their after-school programs running.

Area superintendents met midday Monday to discuss forecasts and circumstances before deciding on reopening.

Conroe, Aldine, Alvin, Clear Creek, Cy-Fair, Dickinson, Fort Bend, Galveston, Houston, Humble, Katy, Pearland, Spring, Tomball, and Waller ISDs will reopen Tuesday.

Officials said they will check weather and facilities all morning
