Entergy Texas will add 1,200 megawatts of capacity with two new natural gas power plants in Port Arthur and Cleveland, set to power 300,000 homes by 2028.
Entergy Texas has announced plans to build two new natural gas power plants in Southeast Texas, following the approval from the Public Utility Commission of Texas on September 11. We anticipate that these initiatives will power over 300,000 residences and stimulate billions of dollars in economic growth.
The Legend Power Station and the Lone Star Power Station are set to contribute over 1,200 megawatts of power to the regional grid. Their collective investment totals $2.4 billion, with expectations to drive $2.8 billion in economic activity throughout the construction phase, resulting in the creation of over 9,000 jobs.
Company leaders announced that the expansion aligns with Entergy Texas’s comprehensive Southeast Texas Energy Plan, or STEP, designed to ensure dependable power for a region undergoing rapid population and industrial growth. “Our customers and communities have expressed a clear demand for increased power to support our swiftly expanding region, and these facilities will provide exactly that,” stated Entergy Texas CEO Eliecer Viamontes. “From families and business owners to schools and essential services, these power plants enhance our capacity to support our customers who rely on us daily.”
Entergy Texas has designed the Legend Power Station in Port Arthur to supply energy to over 190,000 households. We anticipate that the development of the $1.6 billion facility will generate $1.79 billion in economic activity for the region. We expect the Lone Star Power Station in Cleveland to supply electricity to over 110,000 households. We expect the $799 million investment to generate $951 million in economic activity.
Entergy representatives highlighted that the facilities will not only address increasing demand but also enhance reliability and lower costs throughout the utility’s service region. The company has established the plants as essential infrastructure to foster development in residential areas, educational institutions, commercial enterprises, and energy-demanding sectors along the Gulf Coast.
Both projects are scheduled to commence operations by mid-2028. Company leaders highlighted that their development mirrors the rapid growth occurring throughout Southeast Texas communities.
