Flood watch, storms disrupt World Cup events

Houston’s FIFA Fan Festival will be closed Monday as forecasters warn of heavy rain and potential flooding across the area, officials said.

The Houston World Cup host committee announced the closure in response to an 80% chance of rain, with the National Weather Service predicting up to 1 inch of rainfall. A flood watch remains in effect for the region through Wednesday morning.

“Due to anticipated inclement weather conditions and the guidance of public safety officials, FIFA Fan Festival Houston will be closed,” the host committee said in a statement, adding that safety remains the “top priority.”

The free fan festival, located in Houston’s East Downtown district, allows visitors to watch World Cup matches and participate in related events. It is scheduled to operate throughout the tournament, which runs through July 19.

The closure follows a stormy start to Houston’s World Cup events. On Sunday, fans gathered outside NRG Stadium for the city’s first match and were caught in a pregame downpour. The same weather system also temporarily shut down the fan festival earlier in the weekend.

The weather has been a consistent challenge since the festival opened on Thursday. High heat and humidity on the first day led to multiple medical incidents, with the Houston Fire Department reporting that four attendees were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses and about 20 others were treated on site.

The combination of extreme heat followed by heavy rain highlights the volatile early summer conditions common in the Houston area, particularly during large outdoor events.

Officials have not yet announced whether additional closures or schedule changes will be necessary later in the week. Organizers say they will continue to monitor forecasts and coordinate with public safety agencies.

Fans are encouraged to check official updates before attending events and to prepare for changing weather conditions, including both high heat and sudden storms.

The fan festival is expected to reopen once conditions improve, though organizers emphasized that weather-related decisions will continue to prioritize public safety.
