Guard shot during Conroe ATM robbery

On Monday, a Brinks security guard sustained critical injuries after a shooting during an ATM robbery outside a Bank of America branch in Conroe. Authorities reported that the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police chase.

Officers from the Conroe Police Department reported that they were dispatched to a welfare check at approximately 8:20 a.m., located at the ATM in the 1900 block of North Frazier Street. Upon arrival, authorities discovered 59-year-old Quang Truong with gunshot wounds to his torso. Officials reported that first responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.

Authorities reported that the incident involved the theft of money boxes from the ATM. They have examined surveillance footage from a local establishment, which shows a light-colored truck arriving at the ATM. The video captures an individual exiting the vehicle, then returning moments later before the truck departs the scene.

Just moments prior to the shooting, customer Cathy Bunn reported having a brief conversation with Truong. “He inquired whether we were alright.” “I agreed, and he mentioned that he would be servicing the machine, estimating it would take about 45 minutes to an hour,” Bunn stated.

Bunn advised him to remain vigilant. “Stay safe, be aware of your surroundings, and exercise caution,” she remembered advising him.

Officers utilized tracking information from the stolen money boxes to pinpoint the suspect’s vehicle, a gray Dodge pickup, as it headed northbound on Interstate 45. Officers from Conroe police, assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety, attempted to halt the pickup in the vicinity of the 5000 block of I-45, located just south of FM 830.

According to police reports, the suspect reportedly shot himself prior to officers making contact. A nearby hospital received him, but he was later pronounced dead.

Officials have withheld the suspect's identity due to the ongoing investigation.

Authorities in Conroe have indicated that they are confident the stolen funds have been retrieved. The investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI.

Police Chief Mark Hall called on residents to keep the guard in their thoughts as the investigation unfolds.
