A viral audio clip allegedly capturing Peterson Elementary Principal John Aleman making a profane remark about excluding parents from a student ceremony has sparked outrage among Houston ISD families. The district confirmed it is investigating the incident, which has raised broader concerns about transparency, leadership, and parent involvement at the campus.

A principal from Houston ISD is facing increasing scrutiny following the emergence of an audio recording that reportedly features him making an inappropriate remark regarding parental attendance at a student promotion ceremony.
A video circulating on social media, posted by the Houston Federation of Teachers, reportedly shows Principal John Aleman of Peterson Elementary stating, “I don’t want any parents.” There are indications that the presence of parents next week is not desired. In a decisive response to a staff member's inquiry regarding the attendance of families at the school's end-of-year ceremony scheduled for June 4, the answer was a firm "no."
A comment made during a recent staff meeting has sparked immediate criticism from parents, educators, and community members. Jackie Anderson, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, stated, “If you don’t want your parents involved, you don’t need to be there.”
Brooke Basden Longoria, a parent and PTA volunteer, expressed her disapproval of the remarks in a letter addressed to district leadership, labeling them as “horribly offensive” and indicative of a “toxic environment.” Officials announced that families will not be permitted to attend this year's promotion events or participate as volunteers during field day activities.
“My daughter meticulously selected her outfit for the end-of-year ceremony,” Longoria stated. “It is a harsh reality that South Division families are being deprived of this experience.”
Online outrage has intensified, with one commenter stating, “What a sorry excuse of a principal...” There are calls for his termination.
Houston ISD has released a statement acknowledging awareness of the incident, asserting that the actions of the staff members involved do not align with the district's values or practices. The district has confirmed that it is taking appropriate administrative measures.
Peterson Elementary, situated in Southwest Houston, caters to students from Pre-K through 5th grade and has been recognized as a “Platinum Certified Family Friendly School” by HISD. However, this designation is currently facing scrutiny from dissatisfied families.
Officials in the district have yet to confirm if Aleman will be subject to disciplinary measures.
