On Tuesday, various post offices, banks, and libraries in the Houston area will be closed in observance of Veterans Day, a federal holiday honoring military veterans.
Each year on November 11, a special observance honors the brave individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. City officials have confirmed that Veterans Day events in the Houston area will continue as scheduled, despite the current federal government shutdown.
The U.S. Postal Service has announced that all post offices in the Houston area will be closed on Tuesday, with only Priority Mail Express deliveries taking place. Self-service kiosks will remain available for customers in designated post office lobbies. For those interested, a comprehensive list of kiosk locations can be found on the Postal Service’s website.
“On this significant occasion, we pay tribute to the military veterans who have dedicated their service to our country,” stated David Steiner, Postmaster General and CEO. “The Postal Service takes pride in being one of the largest civilian employers for veterans in America.” Their dedication, discipline, and commitment to service enhance our organization and fortify our ties to the communities we support.
Several prominent financial institutions in Houston, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase, will be closed on Veterans Day. We advise patrons to use ATMs or online banking services for their transactions during the holiday.
Public libraries throughout the city will also be closed today. The Houston Public Library system has announced that all branches will resume their regular hours on Wednesday.
Despite the holiday, schools in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and across Harris County will remain open on Veterans Day. The Harris County Department of Education's academic calendar indicates that local districts will remain open on the federal holiday.
Veterans Day is one of the 11 federal holidays observed annually, commemorating the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. Across Houston, communities are coming together to celebrate and honor the nation's service members, with events planned at City Hall and local memorial parks.
