Strong Thunderstorm Targets Conroe Area Monday Afternoon

A strong thunderstorm swept toward Conroe on Monday afternoon, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service, according to NWS Montgomery County. Radar detected the storm near Woodloch — roughly 7 miles northeast of The Woodlands, at 4:56 p.m. CDT, tracking northward at 10 mph and carrying the threat of pea-sized hail and damaging wind gusts.

For Conroe residents, the immediate concern is wind-driven debris. Gusts strong enough to break tree limbs and send unsecured patio furniture, trash cans, or outdoor equipment airborne are possible, and minor hail damage to landscaping and garden vegetation may follow. Anyone outdoors near Lake Conroe or in open areas should move inside until the storm passes.

The alert named a corridor of communities stretching from The Woodlands north through Oak Ridge North, Shenandoah, Cut and Shoot, and into Conroe proper. Neighborhoods along that path, including Porter Heights and Chateau Woods, were listed as directly in the storm's projected track as of the 4:56 p.m. issuance.

Summer afternoon thunderstorms are a recurring pattern across Montgomery County, where heat and Gulf moisture combine to fire fast-developing cells. The Sam Houston National Forest to the north can channel and intensify storm outflow, and communities between The Woodlands and Conroe frequently sit in the path of storms that build over the Houston metro and push northward. Conroe ISD families with children at after-school activities should monitor conditions closely during these peak afternoon storm hours.

Residents should watch for any follow-up warnings or tornado statements from NWS Houston/Galveston, as fast-moving summer storms can escalate quickly. Check the NWS alert feed for updated radar data and any changes to the storm's track or intensity before venturing back outside.
