Montgomery County authorities said that an 11-year-old Magnolia Independent School District pupil died Tuesday after a school bus medical incident.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded at 7:30 a.m. after the pupil lost consciousness on a Magnolia Intermediate School bus. School workers and first responders performed CPR and other life-saving procedures before transporting the youngster to a local hospital, where he died.
A previously diagnosed disease caused the child's medical emergency, the sheriff's office said. Authorities do not suspect any foul play.
The Montgomery County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause.
“We stand in solidarity with the school, faculty, teachers, friends, and the many loved ones of this student,” Precinct 5 Constable Chris Jones stated. “This is an incredibly tough day for our community, and we all feel this tragedy.”
Jones' office manages Magnolia ISD's School Resource Officer program and is helping with the response.
Due to privacy concerns, school officials did not publicize the student's name. Magnolia ISD provided counselors and support professionals to help kids and staff cope with the loss.
Authorities stated the event happened swiftly on the ride to college. Lifesaving operations continued during the student's transit to the hospital once emergency medical workers arrived.
Detectives uncovered no trauma or criminal activity, and the sheriff's office still wants to determine the medical cause.
The death shocked Magnolia, where parents and children gathered outside the school on Tuesday morning. Many families reported the district informed them of an emergency, but that their youngsters were safe.
Officials advised against speculating while the medical examiner tests.
Authorities said bus drivers and staff followed school safety regulations by calling 911 for medical emergencies.
The event occurs while regional districts are examining emergency planning, student health plans, and communication regarding transportation crew medical conditions.
The medical examiner's findings have no official release date. The campus should have grief counselors all week.
