Texas Boom Continues as Conroe Ranks No. 20 Nationwide

The 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, released this week, ranked Conroe as the No. 1 fastest-growing suburb in the Houston area, and Conroe is currently ranked no. 20 among U.S. cities. This rank shows that the community is still appealing to newcomers.

Based on net gains in one-way U-Haul moving deals, the annual study found that as more people moved into the Houston area, Conroe grew faster than other suburbs.

Texas is once again the most popular state in the U.S. for people moving there. In 2025, more than half of all U-Haul customer trips went to the Lone Star State.

The head of the U-Haul Company of Northeast Houston, Robert Abidin, said in a statement that the city of Conroe has grown a lot recently. "This place has a little of everything."

Census figures show that Conroe's population has more than doubled in the past 15 years, going from about 56,200 in 2010 to about 115,000 by mid-2024.

Officials and residents in the area say the influx is due to several factors, including excellent schools, easy access to recreation around Lake Conroe, and housing prices lower than in central Houston.

Based on one-way moving data, the Houston region as a whole also saw strong growth. In 2025, it was the second fastest-growing major city in the United States, after the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Austin and San Antonio also did well on the growth index, indicating that many people are moving to Texas's cities.

Along with McKinney, Seguin, and New Braunfels, Conroe was one of four Texas places to make the national top-20 list. This shows that the state is very appealing to people who want to move. Even though Conroe is growing quickly, it is also facing problems because of it. A recent SmartAsset study placed the city 16th in the country for the median property tax burden as a percentage of local household income. The increase is due to more people using services, which is driving up costs. Still, Conroe's progress appears to be steady. Abidin said that people are moving to the city because it has changed so much: "It used to be a small country town." The city has truly flourished.
