A first-grade teacher at Bartlett Elementary was fired for denying students restroom access as punishment, prompting outrage among parents and an investigation by Conroe ISD.
A first-grade teacher from the Conroe Independent School District (CISD) has been terminated after an incident at Bartlett Elementary School in which students were denied restroom access as a form of punishment, resulting in emotional distress and physical discomfort for several children.
On December 4, it was reported that students were informed they could not use the restroom after a "restroom badge" was lost in the hallway. The restriction endured for several hours, resulting in at least six students experiencing accidents, as reported by parents.
“My son was compelled to work in a filthy environment filled with urine and anxious classmates,” stated parent Ashley Chancey, who condemned the teacher's actions as both unsanitary and harsh.
The school district promptly reacted upon receiving notifications from parents, asserting that the punishment did not reflect the safe and nurturing atmosphere it aims to uphold. The teacher was removed from the classroom and a substitute was assigned while an investigation took place.
CISD stated, “This incident is not a reflection of the thousands of exceptional educators teaching in classrooms across the district.” We are dedicated to assisting the affected students and families while promoting a culture of mutual respect and care.
The incident has sparked worries regarding disciplinary practices in schools, prompting parents to demand enhanced safeguards to avert similar situations. Conroe ISD has committed to upholding the well-being and dignity of its students, reassuring the community of its dedication.

According to authorities who announced on Tuesday, the Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees has designated Dr. David Vinson as the sole finalist for the position of superintendent. The decision comes after a three-month search that attracted candidates from throughout Texas and the nation, as stated by the district. The trustees said that Vinson distinguished himself via his leadership record and dedication to student achievement. Vinson presently holds the position of superintendent at Wylie ISD, having directed the North Texas district since 2011. Throughout his tenure, he successfully managed an increase in student enrollment and the expansion of academic programs, garnering accolades for both educational and extracurricular achievements. State legislation requires a 21-day waiting period before the official hiring of a finalist. After that timeframe, the Conroe ISD board is anticipated to cast a vote regarding Vinson’s official appointment. Conroe ISD, one of the rapidly expanding districts in Texas, serves approximately 72,000 students across 70 campuses. Current Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null revealed earlier this year his intention to retire at the conclusion of 2024.
