On January 21, 2025 Montgomery County and the Houston area woke up to a stunning winter sight for the first time in years. Ground was covered in 2 to 6 inch snowfall; the U.S. National Weather Service recorded the greatest totals here. Texas, Houston-Galveston.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office commended the commitment of its deputies, particularly K9 officers Champ and Chico, who stayed on duty the snow day to maintain public safety. Between answering 911 calls, paramedics and EMTs from the Montgomery County Hospital District also savored fleeting moments in the snow.
Though campuses like The John Cooper School in The Woodlands looked beautiful under a fresh blanket of snow, schools all around closed. People living in neighborhoods like Copper Sage by Lake Woodlands reported snowy views that delighted and surprised the usually warm area.
The snowstorm presented difficulties even as it generated excitement. Alerting citizens to stay home and refrain from travel, the Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management cautioned of frozen road conditions. "Tonight looks another chilly night with a hard freeze. Officials said temperatures falling to 19°F with wind chill below 10°F.
Emphasizing the hazards of black ice as temperatures continued to dip overnight, the Woodlands Township echoed these cautions. By 8 p.m., the U.S. National Weather Service confirmed temperatures had dropped to the mid-20s and cautioned against non-essential travel given dangerous road conditions.
The snow day will go down in history as a unique and treasured event for the area. Notwithstanding the difficulties, the community welcomed the beauty of the day while maintaining constant safety consciousness.
