Conroe brewery to close after nearly 20 years

A popular craft brewery in North Texas is set to close its doors after nearly two decades of operation, signaling yet another setback in the state's changing beer landscape.

Southern Star Brewing Company has officially announced its closure, set for June 28, in a social media post dated May 27. This decision marks the end of a significant chapter for the brewery, which has been a beloved fixture in the Conroe community.

“After many incredible years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors,” the company announced, emphasizing that the brewery’s legacy encompasses not just its beer but also the people and memories created throughout its history.

Known for its flagship Bombshell Blonde Ale and a lineup of locally beloved craft brews, Southern Star has built a loyal following since opening in 2007. The brewery has emerged as a vibrant gathering space for concerts, events, and weekend outings, playing a significant role in enhancing Conroe’s local culture and supporting the small business community.

“This brewery was never just about beer,” the company said in its post. The focus was on the individuals, the recollections, and the bonds formed.

The company did not cite a specific reason for the closure.

Southern Star has made a significant announcement amid a challenging landscape for craft breweries in Texas and across the United States. These establishments are grappling with escalating production costs, evolving consumer preferences, and intensifying competition within the beverage market.

The brewery is set to welcome longtime customers and community members in its final weeks, as they seek to revisit a beloved local establishment before its closure.

In a poignant farewell message, the company conveyed its heartfelt gratitude to the supporters who played a crucial role in sustaining the business for nearly two decades.

“Thank you for every pint, every visit, and every memory,” the post said.
