The Woodlands Township is moving forward with plans to enhance the Waterway Avenue Bridge's lighting system in preparation for the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas race this April.
The bridge, opened in 2004, underwent a lighting replacement five years ago; however, the system has since become outdated. The Township Parks and Recreation Director, John McGowan, emphasized that the upgrades are crucial for modernizing the bridge and improving its appearance for one of the region's most significant annual events.
The township has designated $225,000 for the lighting renovation project in the 2025 Capital Budget. On January 16, the township granted Pieper-Houston Electric L.P. a contract worth $131,157. The project entails replacing all LED-colored lighting, updating related controls, and renovating the iconic "Waterway Square" lettering positioned atop the bridge.
“This is precisely what we needed to revitalize and uphold essential infrastructure,” Township Director Ann Snyder said during the meeting.
The lighting overhaul is part of a larger initiative to restore the bridge, which encompasses painting metal components, roofing repairs, and masonry cleaning. The purpose of these updates is to maintain the bridge as a visual and functional centerpiece of The Woodlands Waterway.
As the Ironman Texas race approaches in just a few months, the township anticipates that the newly renovated bridge will elevate the event and leave a lasting impression on athletes and spectators.
