Armed Sex Offender Arrested in Montgomery County

Deputies apprehended a registered sex offender and seized a stolen firearm during a traffic stop linked to an enforcement initiative for the Memorial Day weekend, according to officials.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies from a DWI Task Force conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at approximately 8:25 p.m. on May 23, located in the 8200 block of FM 1488 in Magnolia. The driver, identified as Jose Dennis Garcia-Murillo, was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

During the investigation, deputies working with federal agents discovered that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued an outstanding administrative warrant for Garcia-Murillo. Authorities have confirmed that the individual in question is a convicted sex offender who had previously been deported and subsequently re-entered the United States illegally.

Following the arrest of Garcia-Murillo, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered a firearm that had been reported stolen in relation to an aggravated robbery in Houston, according to officials.

Authorities reported that Garcia-Murillo worked as a contract delivery driver for Amazon during the time of the stop and had packages in his vehicle.

He faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and has been booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Further federal or local charges could be forthcoming.

Investigators have confirmed that Garcia-Murillo indicated he resides in Harris County. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Compliance Unit has alerted the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following the discovery that an individual failed to register as a sex offender in that area, as mandated by law.

Authorities have confirmed that the case is still under investigation, and they may bring forward further charges.

The arrest is part of intensified enforcement measures during the Memorial Day holiday period, as agencies throughout Texas ramp up patrols to address impaired driving and other criminal activities.
